Safety Standards Guide

More Than Just a Label:
Why Compliance Matters

Purchasing non-compliant safety gear isn't just a budget mistake; it can be a legal liability and, in the worst cases, a risk to human life.

In the complex world of industrial safety, confusing ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 with Class 3 is a common challenge for procurement managers. Yet, the difference determines whether your workers are visible at 50mph on a highway or effectively invisible in a storm.

"At VizGlo Safety, with over 15 years in manufacturing, we don't just sew fabric; we engineer visibility. We adhere to the strictest global standards to ensure your team is compliant, protected, and seen."

The Pillars of Hi-Vis Safety

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020

The primary standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel in the United States.

EN ISO 20471

The international standard for test methods and requirements, widely used in Europe.

Decoding ANSI/ISEA 107-2020:
Class 2 vs. Class 3 Explained

The distinction between Class 2 and Class 3 isn't just about the amount of fabric—it's about the speed of traffic and environmental complexity. Here is the technical breakdown.

MODERATE RISK Type R (Roadway)

ANSI Class 2

  • Background Material:  Minimum 775 sq. in.
  • Reflective Tape:  Minimum 201 sq. in.

Best For: Traffic speeds under 25 mph. Environments where visibility is good, but workers need to be distinguished from the background.

Common Applications:

Toll Gate Operators Airport Ground Crew Forestry

HIGH RISK Type R (Roadway)

ANSI Class 3

  • Background Material:  Minimum 1240 sq. in.
  • Reflective Tape:  Minimum 310 sq. in.

Best For: High speeds (>50 mph). Low visibility conditions like snow, fog, or night work. The garment MUST have sleeves with reflective tape.

Common Applications:

Highway Construction Emergency Responders Railway Workers

Why "Full Sleeves" Define Class 3

You cannot achieve ANSI Class 3 compliance with a vest alone. Why? It's about "Biomotion."

When a driver sees reflective tape on moving limbs (arms), their brain instantly recognizes the object as a "human" rather than a stationary traffic cone. VizGlo's Hi-Vis Hoodies feature 360° reflective bands on the torso and dual bands on the arms, ensuring your team is recognized instantly from any angle.

Global Compliance

The Gold Standard: EN ISO 20471

While ANSI governs North America, EN ISO 20471 is the strict international standard followed by Europe and global markets. Unlike older standards, it doesn't just measure the material when it's new—it demands performance after rigorous usage.

The "5-Wash" Failure Risk

Many budget competitors use reflective tapes that pass the initial brightness test but degrade rapidly after just 5 washes. This leaves your workers non-compliant and vulnerable within weeks.

VizGlo Assurance: We certify our hoodies for a minimum of 25 to 50 wash cycles, ensuring luminance stays above 330 cd/lx/m² long-term.

The 3 Levels of Protection (EN ISO 20471):

03 Class
Highest Level:

Mandatory for highways and airports. Requires 0.80m² fluorescent background and 0.20m² reflective material. VizGlo's Full-Zip Hoodies meet this tier.

02 Class
Intermediate Level:

For standard roadworks and delivery services. Our Hi-Vis Polo shirts and Standard Sweatshirts typically fit here.

Which Gear Fits Your Job Site?

Compliance is not one-size-fits-all. A warehouse forklift operator needs flexibility, while a railway engineer needs heavy-duty protection. Here is how VizGlo engineers specific solutions for your industry.
